Big Sean Makes His Big Debut On Hottest MCs List

Rookie MC steps out of Kanye's shadow with smash Finally Famous album, landing him on MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game.

The biggest part of Big Sean's rise over the past year has been the unwavering support of his fans. While he's signed to a major label (Def Jam) and one of the brightest stars on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music imprint, it was those fans mobbing him at the Adidas store in New York and superstar supporters like Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj hopping on his debut album, Finally Famous, that propelled Sean to #9 on MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game VII — his first appearance on the list.

Big Sean hit the scene out of Detroit's west side as Kanye's newest protégé with 2007's Finally Famous: The Mixtape. For the next three years, he would release two more volumes in the Finally Famous mixtape series — UKNOWBIGSEAN and BIG — and make the coveted XXL Freshmen cover, all the while promising his debut album was coming soon.

That album, however, seemed like it would never see the light of day. Even when Def Jam gave Sean a September 14, 2010, release date, they eventually pushed it back fearing the album wouldn't perform.

"This is an artist who kind of had to fight with his label to get this album out," MTV News producer Steven Roberts said during our Hottest MCs roundtable debate. "I think it was a great thing that as soon as he put out this album, they saw that there was a fanbase there."

The Detroit MC's buzz is very real. He steadily built a huge following that transcended the average Web sensation. He also met the other Hottest criteria by clocking impressive sales numbers, having a sustainable impact on the streets, displaying unique style and spitting some pretty impressive lyrics. Then, of course, there are the intangibles. Sean was able to go into places like Atlanta (a city filled with eccentric rap talent like Travis Porter and Roscoe Dash) and the image-conscious Los Angeles and find out what works for them and make it fit him. He was also able to tag along with another famous fan of his, Wiz Khalifa, to tap into the Pittsburgh MC's sizable Taylor Gang following.

Forecast: It's hard to shine next to Kanye West, but Big Sean stepped out of Yeezy's shadow and crafted his debut with veteran producer No I.D. The album has yielded three hits in "My Last," "Marvin & Chardonnay" and "Dance (A$$)." The Detroit MC is already working on his sophomore album for a 2012 release, but not before he puts in work on Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music label compilation. Seems like things will only get bigger for Sean.

And while Kanye West was in the midst of the creative streak of three lifetimes, Sean's sound further evolved alongside producer No I.D. The two worked together closely on Finally Famous, with I.D.'s tried-and-true formula oddly complementing Sean's ever-changing, still-maturing flow.

"Sean did an amazing thing being on G.O.O.D. Music. How do you shine next to Kanye West who takes all the attention?" MTV News' senior hip-hop writer Rob Markman questioned, citing Yeezy's reclusive nature throughout the year. "We haven't seen Kanye West out there like that, and Sean was out there, so arguably maybe he shines brighter throughout the duration of the year than Kanye West."

With Finally Famous, Sean was able to score four hit records with the viral "I Do It," the Breezy-laced "My Last," a #1 song with 'Ye in "Marvin & Chardonnay" and the percolating ode to the Detroit house scene, the "Dance (A$$)" remix with Nicki Minaj. These tracks could easily be dismissed as products of the label machine, but all of these people — from West to Brown — are fans of Big Sean Don and what he does. They were recruited by Sean or personally reached out to him to collaborate.

It was truly a Cinderella story. "He was like the underdog that made it to the finals," MTV News hip-hop director Rahman Dukes pointed out. "He really did his thing."

Each drink comes in a gaudy, Trump-esque gold tumbler.? Nothing screams sexy and thin like a short, squat bottle.? It is possibly the ugliest packaging design and worst product name I have ever encountered.

This product makes absolutely no sense to me. Who is so devoted to their favorite cocktail that they need to buy a knockoff version of it to drink at home?? And if you are that person, are you bothering to count calories, or do your withdrawal shakes prevent you from reading the nutritional label easily?

Marketing gimmickry aside, these are just diet wine coolers.? The miracle of packing so few calories into each serving is just sucralose.? The same miracle compound in every diet drink everywhere.? And with that, the ever present, lingering sucralose aftertaste.

Now I have never had an Appletini or a Cosmopolitan, what with being a male and all, so I can?t speak as to the fidelity of the flavors here.? The Appletini variety tastes like green apple Jolly Ranchers.? It doesn?t pack the sour punch that a Pucker would, but its overall sweetness does a good job of covering up the alcohol burn.? It is hardly detectable.

The Cosmo packs more of a punch.? It tastes like alcohol, and comes with a slight, shudder-inducing tartness.? I don?t think there are cranberry Jolly Ranchers, but I imagine this taste would be pretty close.

Ivana B. Skinny?s laughable website is packed with starved-looking young models, but I think their real demographic is a little different.? I picture a woman in her late fifties or early sixties.? She?s thin, tanned, of average height, and has clearly had her hair colored, possibly as recently as that morning.? She?s wearing white pants.? She?s wearing a shirt that is probably an animal print and definitely has some shiny gold fabric weaved throughout.? It plunges just a little too low.? She?s wearing many gold bangle bracelets on each wrist.? Around her neck is one of those long gold chain necklaces with giant circles every 12 inches or so.? It hangs down to her naveal. ?Also, from her shoulder dangles some oversized, gaudy handbag. She?s sporting backless, open-toed shoes, proudly displaying her boney, vein-riddled, old lady feet for all of the soon-to-be-nauseated world to see.? She?s my middle school librarian, or every third woman that age in the state of Florida. ?And the rings!? Oh, the rings!

If you vana be skinny, how about a little exercise?? Or perhaps 8 fewer Cosmos?? Or maybe just have a cheat night and drink all you want? ?You deserve it.? ?Just be sure it doesn?t turn into that kind of cheat night! ?Am I right ladies?!

No. 24 Louisville rallies to beat WVU 77-74 (AP)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? Kyle Kuric scored 17 points to lead five Louisville players in double figures and No. 24 Louisville rallied past slumping West Virginia 77-74 on Saturday.

Louisville (20-5, 8-4 Big East) scored 13 of the game's final 16 points to extend its winning streak to six games.

Russ Smith had 16 points off the bench for the Cardinals. Chris Smith and freshman Wayne Blackshear added 13 apiece and Peyton Siva scored 10.

Blackshear, a McDonald's All-American, saw in his first action of the season. He suffered a right shoulder injury in October and wore a protective sleeve in the game Saturday, his 20th birthday.

Kevin Jones had 22 points and 11 rebounds for West Virginia (16-10, 6-7). Deniz Kilicli added 17 points and Darryl "Truck" Bryant scored 13.

West Virginia led 63-54 after a Kilicli basket with 10:49 left, but he didn't score again and eventually fouled out. Louisville went to a full-court press to force turnovers and seize the momentum.

Kuric hit a 3-pointer and Russ Smith stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made a layup with 2:21 left to put Louisville ahead 73-71, its first lead since midway through the first half.

Chris Smith and Kuric each sank two free throws in the final 1:19 to offset Jones' 3-point play.

Bryant's 3-point try at the buzzer never hit the net.

The Mountaineers' shooting touch was consistent until the end, when they made just one basket over the final five minutes to lose for the fifth time in six games. West Virginia shot 36 percent (8 of 22) after halftime.

Despite shooting bonus free throws over the final 11 minutes, West Virginia attempted just eight, making four.

Louisville returned from a five-day layoff by hitting five of its first six 3-point attempts. But the Cardinals didn't have much early luck inside the arc, including a missed layup on a 4-on-1 break.

West Virginia held Louisville scoreless over a nearly four-minute stretch in the first half, and Kilicli scored five points during a 12-0 run. The Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half, led by as many as 13 points and were ahead 44-37 at halftime.

The 44 points tied for the most allowed by Louisville in the first half this season.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? A former Philadelphia police officer pleaded guilty today to theft, perjury, and criminal conspiracy.

According to the Philadelphia district attorney?s office, Dwayne Darby admitted to being involved in a false insurance claim that was submitted for a 2006 Volvo registered to his boyfriend. The boyfriend falsely reported the car stolen so that he could collect the insurance money.

Darby, who worked as a police sergeant for 15 years before he was terminated in 2010, was sentenced to three years? probation and a $5,000 fine.

Obama: Diplomacy 'preferred solution' with Iran

Israel is right to be concerned about Iran's push to join the league of nations that possess nuclear weapons, but diplomacy - not military intervention - remains the "preferred solution" to averting a potential arms race in the Middle East, President Barack Obama said Sunday.

During a live interview with TODAY's Matt Lauer, the president left the military option open if there's evidence that economic sanctions and diplomatic efforts fail to convince the Iranian regime to give up its nuclear ambitions and threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic gateway to the oil-rich Persian Gulf.

"I don't think Israel has made a decision. I think they, like us, think Iran has to stand down their nuclear weapons program," said Obama, speaking from the Blue Room of the White House. "Until they do, I think Israel is going to be very concerned, and we are as well."

Although Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said publicly that Israel could be poised to make a preventive strike against Iran as early as late spring or early summer, Obama said the U.S. has close ties to Israel and will make sure that all diplomatic efforts are exhausted.

"We are going to make sure we work in lock step and work to resolve this, hopefully diplomatically," said Obama, who spoke about Iran, the economy and the Super Bowl during the five-minute interview.

"We're not taking any options off the table," Obama said. "Our preferred solution is diplomatic, we're going to keep on pushing on that front ... [but] I've been very clear that we're going to do everything we can to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and creating an arms race, a nuclear arms race, in a volatile region."

Obama said the international pressure on Iran through sanctions is working and Iran needs to say, "We will pursue peaceful nuclear power, we will not pursue a nuclear weapon ."

Obama: I deserve another term
During the interview, which will be broadcast in its entirety on TODAY Monday, Obama also talked about his re-election bid. He was reminded of a comment he made to Lauer three years ago, during an interview before the 2009 Super Bowl about the economic crisis, in which he said, "If I don't have this done in three years, then it's going to be a one-term proposition."

Lauer noted a new report showing U.S. unemployment has fallen below 9 percent, but many Americas still don't feel the poor economy has turned around, and asked Obama if he's made his case for re-election.

"I deserve a second term, but we're not done," Obama replied. "We've got to boost up American manufacturing, so that all our manufacturing is building again and selling overseas. We've got to make sure that we're pushing American energy ... and we've got to make sure the skills of American workers are the best in the world.

"We've made progress, and the thing right now is to just make sure we don't starting turning in a new direction that could throw that progress off."

But the president was less forceful in making a prediction on the 2012 Super Bowl. While he confidently picked Pittsburgh to beat Arizona before the 2009 Super Bowl, Obama refused to use a crystal ball on tonight's game, despite much goading from Lauer.

"You're not going to get to me," a laughing Obama told Lauer. "I say to look for a great game.
"I think this is going to be tough. I can't call it."

"I think they know he's a goodlooking guy, there's no doubt about it," Obama said. But he added Malia and Sasha don't decorate their White House bedrooms with his posters.

The?Institute for American Values did a very interesting talk titled ?The Mating/Marriage Dance: Is the Prolonged Search for a Mate by Young College Graduates a Problem for American Society???with?Kay S Hymowitz and?Barbara Dafoe Whitehead. If you want to watch it, you may do so here.

Here are my notes:

Kay Hymowitz wrote her book after she noticed romantic discontent and despair, amongst ?education 20-something females. That?s when women start to feel really anxious about finding a good man to marry. They were great catches, so why were they worried??For women, the romantic despair comes from not knowing.

In doing research for the book she found that there was an upheaval in the system of courtship that had been in place for certuries. In its place came the ?relationship system?.? We went from romantic courtship with a clear destination to marriage to some call ?relationships?.

The differences are huge. In the romantic courtship system (RCS), the population that is involved almost exclusively is young, never married men and women. The destination is marriage. The relationship system includes just about anybody under the sun who is looking for a partner (young, old, single, divorced, married people who want ?something on the side?). With the RCS, there?s a series of clearly defined steps, the ?ladder of commitment?. In the relationship system, people are constantly moving in and out of relationships which are of varying duration and commitment.

Young women go through many of these relationships that have no destination in mind.

Now we have a new stage in development, pre-adulthood. This lasts from early 20s to mid 30s. It has lead to a different set of problems for men than from women.

Women have a clock in the back of their heads going ?tick-tock tick-tock?. Even if they haven?t decided by 25 whether they want to get married and have kids, they know that the decision needs to be made within the next few years. Men don?t have this same sense and when they do think about that same decision, it?s typically way down the line. They don?t see a problem with waiting until 35 or 40. So women hit 25, 27, are ready to get married but men are in no rush to commit. Disillusioned, women assumed it would unfold naturally.

We have the reverse problem today than previous generations. It used to be easy to pair off during college while the career path (for women) was harder to discern. But today it?s hard to find someone who wants to commitment but easy to find a career path. How do you meet the right man to marry? This is a great puzzle for women today.

Growing up, men were taught that women could do anything men could do and that women should be treated with respect. Gender-neutral society was the ideal. But they found that women didn?t like that when it came to dating. The complaint of the nice guy was that they treat women well but then they go for the jerks instead.

The loss of the script, no one knows how you?re supposed to behave, unless you naturally have a great deal of social skill, you?re going to have a hard time. A lot of guys don?t get what you?re supposed to be doing.

Women respond to confidence but these guys had no idea how to project confidence.

With the loss of the classic courtship model, we?ve lost a lot of male initiative. In fact, in order to get married, the burden is on the woman to push the guy that she?s been in a long-term relationship with to get there. She sees her job as turning a live-in boyfriend into a husband.

If females and males are equals as we have been told since childhood, then why is it up to the guy to take initiative to ask women out? So they don?t, and women become frustrated.

Who pays for dinner? A lot of single, childless women make more than men, but then still want men to pay for the meal.

Institutions are no longer vested in getting people to meet each other and get married. Onus used to fall on families, schools, religious institutions. On a larger scale, today young people are not rooted anywhere; they live their lives very autonomously.

Young women, 5-10 years out of college and having had a few relationships that ended badly tend to become suspicious, leery of men and romance. (Harden their hearts). It adds to the gender conflict.

For a few of these women, they are not going to be able to overcome this; they will chose to have children alone. A number of women are going to remain single and a number of men as well. They will be disconnected from family life. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a huge social problem. It?s the people without a college education (read: lower classes) that are not getting married. Most college-educated people in America get married (about 80%).
